Discover Historic Round Rock

Leave yourself a little time to explore while you're here.

Just minutes from the Reunion hotel is Downtown Round Rock, where historic limestone buildings, restaurants, shops, and gathering places line Main Street. The downtown commercial district dates largely to the arrival of the railroad in the late 1870s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

But downtown Round Rock also has a decidedly Wild West story.

Walk in the Footsteps of Sam Bass

On July 19, 1878, notorious outlaw Sam Bass and members of his gang walked into Round Rock intending to rob a bank. Instead, their encounter with local lawmen and the Texas Rangers erupted into what became known as the Great Round Rock Shootout. Bass was mortally wounded and died the following day.

Today, visitors can walk the historic downtown streets where the confrontation unfolded and find markers associated with the shootout. The city even maintains a historic walking guide identifying the locations connected with Bass and the events of that day.

For a group of Civil War and Texas history enthusiasts, I think this is a particularly good attraction to highlight.

See the Rock That Gave the City Its Name

Round Rock really does have a round rock.

A short distance from downtown, The Round Rock sits in Brushy Creek at the historic low-water crossing used along the Chisholm Trail. The table-shaped limestone rock became a landmark for travelers and eventually gave the community its name.

Nearby Chisholm Trail Crossing Park provides another glimpse into the area's cattle-drive and pioneer history.

Make a Weekend of It

Explore historic Main Street. Follow the story of Sam Bass and the Texas Rangers. Visit the Chisholm Trail crossing. Find the rock that gave Round Rock its name. Or simply discover a restaurant downtown and enjoy an evening with friends.

The Reunion gives you the reason to come to Round Rock. We hope you'll leave with a few stories about the town, too.
